This past week, I’ve been privy to trying out one of the portable external monitors from our friends at ASUS – the ASUS ZenScreen MB166C and boy was it an unexpected treat.
On the surface, the ZenScreen is about as basic as you would find it to be. Its a 16″ display with three physical buttons, a USB-C port, and a quarter thread mount on its back side – that’s it.
Inside the packaging there is a carrying case which doubles as the stand when you’re going to be actually using the screen – there are two flaps that let you orient the monitor in one of two ways depending on the particular use case. It can be either more upright or a little more angled for your viewing preference – personally I find that the more upright configuration suits my computing style better in several scenarios.
Naturally it also comes with its own USB-C display AND power cable. Yep you read that right, its just a single cable that handles giving the ZenScreen juice and transferring display data onto it. The length is around 1.1 meters which allows you to prop it on either the left or right side of your laptop – whichever is more preferential to the user or whatever configuration the computing surface allows for.
Oh and just in case you were wondering, because I know someone somewhere would want to use it this way, YES, the ZenScreen can be used vertically too. Just need to be a bit more careful when using it this way as the stand is not that extended for this configuration.
It can be used with anything that has a USB-C port that is able to extend its display in that fashion. The quarter thread mount would be especially useful for filmmaking as it can serve as your mobile monitor for increased fidelity and assist in making framing decisions that much more swiftly and confidently
The ZenSceen MB166C retails for Php 11,790 and is a definitive upgrade to any mobile computing experience. Transforming wherever you are into a veritable workstation class experience.
I have used it in meetings, conferences, with references, developing designs, you name it (well anywhere that has a big enough surface at least) and the cleanup is as simple as taking off the USB-C cable, unfolding the case/stand, and sliding the display in.
Simple, clean, and ultimately impressive both from the perspective of the user and the onlooker. The ZenScreen comes highly recommended.
